singapore fashion festival reviews

Text: Ashburn Eng

T
he Singapore Fashion Festival 2006 posed to be THE annual fashion and shopping extravaganza presented by the luxury car brand, Mercedes-Benz and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

The Singapore Fashion Festival 2006 (SFF), which ran from 24 March - 2 April 2006, featured exclusive threads from around the globe to celebrate all things fashion.

From a wide spectrum of retail offerings from Singapore's renowned local designers, departmental stores, shopping districts and fine boutiques to fashion-themed parties at clubs & at the red dot design museum, as well as fashion exhibitions - Singapore suddenly turned into a fashion paradise for ten days.

Hundreds of show attendees, which comprised of the international press, celebrities, socialites, retailers, buyers, and assorted fashionistas, turned up for the events. There were hordes of photographers and paparazzi milling about, camera in tow, just waiting to snap a picture of that worthy subject.

Although nothing can quite compared to the workload of the designers who sewed up everything for the show, it comes as a relief in the end to know that it only comes around twice yearly. Looking at the work put into it, from the photographers to the organisers to the show-goers, it probably requires nearly that much time for everyone to recuperate!

So, what were the fashion statements of the runways? Style watcher, Ashburn Eng joins the fashion journos on the front row and exposes THINK's verdict on the shows:

MTV Fashionably Loud

Held in Asia for the very first time, MTV Networks Asia and the STB, held in conjunction with SFF, showcased the fusion of music and fashion. UK's Super rock band, Placebo, was specially invited to perform an electrifying live performance of their greatest hits and new tracks from their new album "Meds".

Frontman Brian enchanted their die-hard fans with taunts, pouts, furious guitar riffs and a voice that cut to the core. Gorgeous models wearing multi-fashion labels (eg. Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, Kenzo, Anteprima, Fashion Assassin, Baylene, Nicholas, Miss Sixty, G-star, Energie, Eh Hardy, G-star) glamorized the show while showcasing designs inspired by 'Rock Resurrection', portraying destruction, renewal, grief and joy.

The excited fans greeted Placebo with an uproar of wolf whistles and catcalls. Needless to say, the band had the audience in their pockets from start to finish. WE LOVE PLACEBO!

Salvatore FerragamoWildly Glamorous Night with Salvatore Ferragamo!

The VIP lounge was transformed into a jungle of wild and exotic beauty with majestic snowy owls, chatty parrots, vivid pink flamingos and even a tame golden python.

At the entrance, guests were greeted by the floral-fruity scent of Salvatore Ferragamo's latest perfume, Incanto Charms. The starry attraction of the night was a pair of rare Major Mitchell Cockatoos, which are featured on the Salvatore Ferragamo prints.

Gracing the opening number of Salvatore Ferragamo Spring/Summer 2006 Collection was international top model Lily Cole. Wong Li Lin was the host with special appearance of local songbird Tanya Chua, who sang a song she specially wrote for the night. Korean celebrities Ms Kim So Yeon and Mr. Kim Sung Min were also both present for the dinner.

alldressedupLocal Delights at alldressedup

Prestigious homegrown label alldressedup's Spring/Summer 2006 is fresh, modern, and stylish for the urban-minded young and chic ladies.

It embodied its influences from Japan and Morocco, mixing Western aesthetics and Asian sensibility in its outfits. The Bohemian-spirited traveler was Sven Tan's theme, and it was made evident in geometric graphical dresses on the runway.

He even offered his own minimalist take on one of the season's big trends, ruffles, by stringing circles together and stitching them at their sleeves, collar, cuffs to the hem of a skirt. And who could ignore the pleating of cotton voile, georgette, and chiffon? Plus, a special limited edition hand-printed tanktop by fashion designer Ueno Hiroko was given out to the guests!

Lancôme Liberte d'eteBEST DRAMATIC SHOW: Lancôme Liberte d'ete

It was filled with charm, glamour, the sweet life and energy of a summer's day.

Before the start of the show, the seats were already all taken up and some show attendees have to stand behind the seats just to get a glimpse of the runway.

This year, beauty giant Lancôme collaborated with multi-fashion award winner Posse, as well as presented makeup versatility, innovation and expertise with haute couture maestro Francis Cheong, the theatrical Frederick Lee and home-coming boy Yang De Rong to showcase the creative work inspired by the designer's interpretation of Lancôme Summer Collection 2006 - through the expressions of Verve, Luxury, Desire and Emotions.

Each collection presented on the runway was really exciting! And when the models sashayed down the runway, each outfit was more dramatic than the previous, fueling rapturous applause from the crowd.

Triumph International presents Decadence & DesireThe New Sexy, with Triumph International presenting Decadence & Desire

Not everyone one would expect, complete with bare butts, big bosoms, risque lingerie, was trapeze swinging?

A troop of beautiful ladies was dressed up in a new sensational way with crossover of trend setting hairstyles, fashion garments and accessories at the Triumph International couture lingerie fashion show.

The theme of the show was 'Decadence & Desire', aiming to bring out the seductive side of a woman.

The collection ranged from Queen Victoria to mysterious oriental style, but I loved the nautical collection best. Sexy, glamorous and tantalizing camisoles ooze with seductive elegance, characterized by provocative yet demure cutouts and nautical ornaments.

Though the models didn't really look like they were in the prime of their lives, most still appeared coy and flaunted their well-toned bodies with the fresh new Triumph lines.
