1. The salon is the root cause of everything.
First and foremost, finding a good salon is very important. Remember, your hairstyle can either make you or break you, so you wouldn't want to entrust your hair with a salon that doesn't even know the difference between a 'ceramic perm' and a 'digital perm'.
A good way to strike gold is to get recommendations from friends whom you have found to have a good haircut.
If you are not really sure if the recommended salon makes the cut, you could even follow your friend on one of his or her visits to the salon. Talk to the hairstylists there and find out more on what they can offer you.
2. Find hairstylist with akin taste
Though hairstylists may be the gurus of hair, different stylists would have different views and styles about what looks good and what doesn't. Thus, it is very important to engage a hairstylist who shares a similar aesthetic sense as yourself.
I always let my hairstylist decide what to do to my hair because I think he knows best and I trust and know his taste too. Thus, once you have found your dream hairstylist, stick to him.
3. What should be my hairstyle?
It is always good to engage in small conversation with your hairstylist. Tell them about your job scope, dressing sense, styles & image that you want to portray to the rest of the world. It will help them to understand you and your taste better and analyze which hairstyle is suitable for your daily activities and lifestyle.

Be mindful that what looks good on Mariah Carey or Fann Wong might not necessarily look fabulous or flattering on someone else. When choosing your hairstyles do not suggest following celebrity hairstyles or contemporary styles blindly. But if you do really dig a particular hairstyle, I guess the next best thing would be to allow your hairstylist to modify the hairstyle to custom-make to your facial shape.
Never ever tell the hairstylist what to do to your hair. Remember, they are the hair smiths. They are the ones who will at a glance be able to tell if a particular hairstyle is suitable for you and they are the ones who know what's in and what's out.
4. Give Specific Directions
At the end of the day, it's your hair and you get to call the shots as to how short or how long you want your hair to be. Yes, give your stylist the creative freedom to work their styling magic but of course within the boundaries in which you are comfortable with.
And when giving directions, it is very important to be specific. Don't just say, "I want to crop my hair short." Instead, specify and tell your hairstylist your limits. Tell him/her exactly where you want to stop. How short is your short? Shoulder length? Chin length? Above or below the ears?
Also, tell them how manageable you want your hair to be. Do you want a wash and wear style or are you willing to spend 10 to 15 minutes on your hair everyday?
